Daniel, protagonist of Story's The Beached Ones, wakes up in Iowa confused about many things: how he got halfway across the country without knowing it, where his wallet and phone are, and why most people no longer seem able to hear or see him. What he is sure of is that he promised his little brother he'd pick him up in San Francisco in five days. Accompanying him on this journey are Jolene, an ex-girlfriend who has talked to many ghosts but is unable to contact the spirit of her recently deceased mother, and Brent, a brooding and mysterious man now in Jolene's life. As the trio trek cross-country, several unusual deaths occur, prompting suspicion and fear among the three. Promises, grief, letting go, and the power of aiding others are all prominent themes here. Those who wish for closure or to know what happens when a loved one dies will empathize strongly with Daniel and Jolene as they struggle to face their truths and pay their debts.
