The first in a brand-new cozy series from Diane Kelly set in Nashville—where the real estate market is to die for.
WILL THIS KILLER DEAL LEAD TO A DEAD END?
Meet Whitney Whitaker. A hopeless romantic when it comes to real estate, she knows what it takes to find—and flip—the home of one's dreams. A fixer-upper is like catnip to Whitney: she can't resist the challenge of turning an eyesore into a priceless work of art. So when one of her clients decides to liquidate a crumbling property, Whitney seizes the opportunity to purchase it for a song. But soon a curious incident of the cat in the night-time leads to a change in tune. . .
Sawdust is the name of Whitney's cat—of course. Whitney's passion for gut-renovation may be a mystery to him but one thing Sawdust knows for sure is this: Dead bodies don't belong in flower beds. So why is there one in this new, albeit old, house? Now it's up to Whitney, along with the help of hot-and-cold Nashville Police Detective Collin Flynn, to find the truth about what happened before the mortgage property forecloses and Whitney loses her investment. . .and maybe her own life.

A novice house flipper lands in trouble when her first property becomes a murder scene.Ready to grow from property manager to real estate investor, Whitney Whitaker is preparing to take her real estate licensing exam while she's working her full-time gig managing rental properties for Home & Hearth. Her biggest account, with high-end owner Rick Dunaway--quite a get for Nashville--ends emphatically when Whitney has to evict the tenants who have trashed his beautiful house. Furious with the renters, Rick loses his cool with Whitney, something that sends her into a tailspin until Rick offers to sell her the house to banish his own stress. Thrilled with the prospect of her first flip, Whitney's certain she can use her carpentry skills to turn the old house into something as profitable as it is beautiful. She brings in her cousin Buck, relying on his expertise and his share in the capital investment. As investing mogul Thaddeus Gentry III breathes down her neck to take the house off her hands, Whitney resolves to show that she can make something of the place even when she and Buck hit a string of bad luck. But the corpse Whitney finds in the flower garden out front may be the death blow to her real estate dreams and her freedom, since Detective Collin Flynn seems determined to charge her with the murder. If only Whitney and Sawdust, her constant feline companion, can find the real criminal, she can keep herself out of jail and set herself up for long-term success.Kelly (The Long Paw of the Law, 2018, etc.) introduces a new heroine who's so physically and mentally capable that she doesn't rely on anyone to crack the case, not even her cat sidekick.

Whitney Whitaker lives frugally with her cat, Sawdust, in her parents' pool house, saving up while working as a property manager, moonlighting in the family construction business, and studying for her real-estate license so that she can pursue her dream of flipping houses. Then the break comes. Just before Thanksgiving, she has to evict three young men from a house in an up-and-coming district. They have trashed it so badly that the owner, one of Nashville's leading commercial-property owners, sells it cheaply to Whitney?and her cousin, who has the cash. Whitney quickly learns that cheap may not be good, as faulty wiring catches on fire, and she suspects collusion between the seller and the house inspector. The day after Whitney accuses the seller of deceit, Sawdust finds the seller's body, partially buried in the front garden. Whitney is the prime suspect, as he was bludgeoned with her hammer. The Celtic Green Man door knocker knows all, but it takes Whitney, her cousin, Sawdust, and her friend, a local chef, to ferret out the truth. Whitney and her allies are engaging characters, forging bonds that should grow as this new series continues.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
