When a young woman trades places with her noble cousin, their innocent ruse leads to true love in this sparkling new Regency-era romantic comedy of manners from the author of Mr. Malcolm’s List.
When Arabella Grant’s wicked aunt dies suddenly, both Arabella and her cousin Lady Isabelle cannot help but feel relieved. She’d made their lives miserable, and now Lady Issie is free to read to her heart’s content, and Bella is free from taunts about her ignoble birth.
Their newfound freedom is threatened, however, when Issie’s great-aunt commands her to travel to London for a come-out Issie has never wanted. Issie, who is in poor health, is convinced she’ll drop dead like her mother did if she drops into a curtsy before the queen. So when her great-aunt turns out to be nearsighted and can’t tell the noble Lady Isabelle from her commoner cousin Arabella, Issie convinces Bella to take her place. Bella can attend all the exclusive entertainments that her lower birth would typically exclude her from, and Issie can stay in bed, her nose in a book.
Bella agrees to the scheme for her cousin’s sake, but matters turn complicated when she meets the irresistible Lord Brooke. He begins courting her while under the impression she’s the rich and aristocratic Lady Isabelle, who, unlike Bella, is a suitable bride for an eligible young earl. And Bella, who is convinced that she has met “Lord Right,” worries what will happen when she reveals that he’s actually fallen for…the wrong lady.

Love blooms amid deception in this delightful Regency rom-com from Allain (Mr. Malcolm’s List). After the death of Lady Strickland, mother to Lady Isabelle “Issie” Strickland and aunt to Arabella “Bella” Grant, the cousins enjoy a peaceful life at Fenborough Hall, free from the difficult woman’s rules. But their idyll comes to an end when Issie’s great aunt, the very nearsighted Lady Dutton, demands that the pair come to London for the social season. Bookworm Issie is terrified of being presented to the queen, so she asks Bella to pretend to be her. Bella reluctantly agrees, and literally bumps into the very eligible Lord Brooke right before her presentation, igniting their mutual attraction—though Brooke believes Bella is Issie. Meanwhile, the cousins arrange for Issie to see a doctor about her heart palpitations—and Issie’s shocked to find young Dr. Jordan so deeply attractive. Both women embark on new romances, but as their time in London comes to an end, their futures are complicated by arrangements Lady Dutton has made for them without their consent. Allain keeps things G-rated, but still manages to generate some fun romantic tension, and the plot moves at a steady clip while taking the time to fully develop its multifaceted heroines. Regency fans will be riveted.

When Arabella's oppressive aunt dies suddenly, she thinks she's finally free from her strict social rules. She and her cousin Isabelle seem to go unnoticed for a brief, blissful time before Isabelle's great-aunt remembers her existence and summons her to London for the Season. Isabelle doesn't think she can withstand the strain of the trip and begs Arabella to take her place. Arabella reluctantly agrees but soon begins to enjoy the balls, museums, and events that would otherwise have been closed to her. Everything seems divine until she meets the man of her dreams and can't reveal her true identity. Allain (The Ladies Rewrite the Rules) presents a charming historical romance full of mistaken-identity hijinks and humor. Narrator Elizabeth Knowelden is the quintessential voice of a refined Regency miss. Her lyrical lilt, paired with the upbeat leading ladies, creates an immersive and alluring listening experience. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking a chaste Regency rom-com about love in disguise. Recommended for fans of Martha Waters, Sophie Irwin, and Virginia Heath.--Lauren Hackert

Elizabeth Knowelden narrates a light and frothy Regency romance. After a year of mourning, Young cousins Issie and Bella travel to London, where they are mistaken for each other. Rather than correct the error, they let it continue. Knowelden creates distinctive personalities for the two girls: She depicts Bella as charming and vivacious, while Issie is portrayed as more subdued and anxious. Their respective romantic interests--a dashing lord and a charming doctor--are also believably portrayed. The love and friendship between the cousins, which Knowelden delivers with warmth and tenderness, is a highlight. Overall, Knowelden's fun narration makes this story far more enjoyable than the whisper-thin plot should allow. K.M.P. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine
