It's a family affair with father, mother, and daughter--Jim, Tamra, and Taylor Meskimen--sharing the narrative duties in this inventive collection of Writers of the Future Contest-winning science fiction and fantasy short stories. The works are by established and first-time authors from around the globe. Taylor brings a wistful gentleness to an AI cat in "The Edge of Where My Light Is Cast" by Sky McKinnon, while Tamra captures the third-world-folktale-feel of Jack Nash's "Son, Spirit, Snake." Jim's voice finds the straightforward golden-age sci-fi tone in a reflection on sacrifice in "Ashes To Ashes, Blood To Carbonfiber" by James Davies. The audiobook also features English voice talent Victoria Summer and a fun 1940s pulp piece by L. Ron Hubbard, stylishly read by Jim Meskimen. B.P. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine

The 12 winners of the 40th Annual Writers of the Future Award, along with experienced writers Nancy Kress ("Halo") and S.M. Stirling ("Shaman Dreams"), offer exciting entries that come alive in audio. Science fiction fans will be delighted by the skillful performances of narrators Jim Meskimen, Taylor Meskimen, Tamra Meskimen, and Victoria Summer, who beautifully describe this collection's varied worlds. The narrators have a knack for taking the authors' winning material to deliver tear-jerkers one moment and make a toaster's love for a time traveler (and vice versa) believable the next. Tales of spirits come to life, as do high-tech crises, such as when human miscalculations thwart space explorers' pioneering efforts. Listeners will appreciate the depth of feeling--and loneliness--expressed in the assortment of dystopian stories, as with the loyal virtual cat who looks for its lost owner or the private eye who no longer has the energy to feed a parasitic squid and wants only to retire and find a true friend. VERDICT This wide-ranging collection, accessible in one unique volume, is highly recommended for those seeking inventive voices from around the globe. Aspiring writers may also find inspiration for honing their craft and storytelling skills.--Sharon Sherman
