Helena is a healer. Ivan is her prisoner. Caught in the crossfire of war, they must choose: loyalty or love.

The Balkans, 1383

A sudden conflict between Serbs and Greeks has forced Ivan to join his brother and fight with the Serbian army. On the battlefield, Ivan is wounded and captured by the hostile Greeks, becoming a hostage in a deadly bid for power.

Helena, a Greek midwife, is tasked to care for Ivan, a request that will test not only her healing abilities but also her loyalty. Though war has made her reluctant patient an enemy, she can't help but forge a connection with him, yet falling in love with him could turn her world upside down and brand her a traitor.

As the Ottoman Empire extends its grip into the Balkans, events beyond their control force Ivan and Helena to choose between loyalty to their families and people or following the longings of their hearts.

Award-winning historical novelist A. L. Sowards creates an engaging world of overlords and spies, rebellions and battlefields, and forbidden love.

The second stand-alone book in Sowards' Balkan Legends series--following Beneath a Crescent Shadow (2024)--revolves around the relationship between Helena, a Greek midwife, and Ivan, a Serb noble, amidst forces that keep them apart. Iskandar, an Ottoman ghazi (warrior, or champion), schemes to start a battle between the Greeks and the Serbs, resulting in Ivan being seriously wounded and captured by Greek forces. As a prisoner with plenty of status, enough to become a pawn in the negotiations to regain the nephew of the head of Byzia, Ivan's injuries need to be tended to, and are addressed by Helena. Those ministrations result in love that looks to have no chance. Both Ivan and Helena are honorable and put duty to their own above all else, but their reluctant love endures, even as they lose chance after chance to be together. A glossary with historical background and an extensive list of characters helps maintain understanding of the brutal and intricate politics, society, and battles of the multiple nationalities and various religions in and adjacent to the fourteenth-century Ottoman Empire.
