For fans of Cottonmouths by Kelly J. Ford comes Negative Girl: an evocative, moody, neo-noir thriller that explores obsession and people dying across America's forgotten spaces.
Martin Wade lived hard in his youth, but unlike many of his former bandmates and roadie friends, he didn’t die young. Instead he hit the recovery path, cleaned up his life, and became a private investigator in a dying city in upstate New York.
When his heavily tattooed and scarred assistant Valerie sets up an appointment with a young woman who needs help keeping her biological father away from her, none of the three realize that the father is Martin’s old bandmate, still using, and on a destructive path that will soon be headed straight for Martin’s clean life. As Martin struggles, Valerie becomes increasingly obsessed with their new client’s life.

A rock star turned PI and his doting assistant investigate the murder of their client in this lifeless neo-noir from Cudmore (The Big Rewind). In the 1980s, Martin Wade found fame with his band the French Letters, but addiction and interpersonal discord led the group to split up. Now, with nearly 20 years of sobriety under his belt, Martin has established a small-town detective agency in Upstate New York, where he tackles cases with the help of music journalist (and French Letters superfan) Valerie. The past comes calling when Janie Carlock, the daughter of French Letters guitarist Ron Carlock, hires Martin to help protect her from her father. A longtime addict, Ron abandoned Janie years ago and is now seeking to reconnect, but Janie fears he has ulterior motives. When she’s found dead in a river, the police label it an accident, but her closest friends think it’s foul play—forcing Martin and Valerie to consider the possibility that Ron killed her. Punk and new wave fans may enjoy the music trivia and playlists on offer, but mystery readers are likely to object to the stale plotting and predictable denouement. This fails to strike a chord. Agent: Jim McCarthy, Dystel, Goderich & Bourret.

This engaging detective mystery brings together two people who are bound in their love of music and their commitment to atoning for their pasts. Martin Wade is a private investigator who runs his own detective agency in upstate New York. His cases primarily consist of relocating missing items and surveillance of wayward spouses. He is assisted by his talented associate Valerie. The pair found each other when they each needed a friend the most. Martin lived a fast and loose rock-and-roll lifestyle that nearly killed him, while Valerie's relationship with a drug user left her fleeing for her safety. Despite their past turmoil, Martin and Valerie work well together. A new case appears clear-cut, but when Martin probes a little further, he discovers a connection to his tormented past. He decides to bail on the case, but when the client is found dead, he can no longer avoid a dance with destiny. VERDICT Cudmore's (The Big Rewind) neo-noir is a well-crafted story that not only functions as an ode to great music but also assembles a plot that is consistently entertaining and satisfying.--Philip Zozzaro
