Set in 1959, the year the music died, The Smoke in Our Eyes is a cinematic, clock-ticking saga set in a small Montana town. When a fatal car accident shatters ten-year-old Lucas's world, he finds himself confronting crime and vengeance, humor and heroism, all against the backdrop of growing up. Alongside the tightly written drama of Lucas and his family, Grady, author of the classic Condor series, evokes a heady mood and sense of place. From the Space Race and the first warnings of global climate change to the brutal racism of segregation and the hope of a new generation to move us forward, The Smoke in Our Eyes is a fresh rending of rural noir that captures both an intimate story and the volatility of mid-century America.

This episodic, noir-tinged coming-of-age story from Grady (The Train) finds 10-year-old Lucas Ross grappling with the confusions of adolescence in 1950s small-town Montana. After a car accident kills local teen Earl Klise, Lucas watches quietly as the tenuous bonds in rural Martin County begin to fray. His progressive, new-to-town fifth grade teacher, Jordan Smith, helps Lucas foster an awareness of the world outside his small community with classroom lessons inspired by her own travels. Not everyone takes kindly to Jordan’s enlightened sensibilities, however, and tensions rise when she’s drawn into an affair with her coworker Neal Dylan. Neal enlists Lucas to take care of his infant daughter and alcoholic wife, entangling the boy in the family’s volatile domestic situation. Meanwhile, Earl’s grief-stricken mother vows revenge on Hal Hemmer, the teenage survivor of the car accident that killed her son, and Lucas teams up with Jordan and Neal to protect him. Though the threat of violence looms throughout the narrative, Grady for the most part delivers a spare tale of domestic tragedy, light on incident but rich with nostalgia and memorable characters. Thriller readers might twiddle their thumbs, but Larry McMurty fans will enjoy themselves. Agents: David Hale Smith and Michael Carlisle, InkWell Management.

Set in 1959, this beautifully written coming-of-age story about 10-year-old Lucas Ross, who lives in Montana, is affectionately narrated by Pete Cross. Cross's plain delivery and sincere tone allow listeners to step into Lucas's shoes as he discovers the joys and revelations of adolescence. When a car crash causes the death of a teenager, Cross voices Lucas's uncertainty about the blame placed on the boy who survived. Lucas also befriends an ostracized new classmate, portrayed by Cross with a slightly Native accent and a defensive edge. Inspired by his progressive, young fifth-grade teacher, Lucas experiences his first crush and a widening world view. Perhaps there is room in life for more grace, acceptance, and new ideas than are traditionally found in his small Montana town. N.M.C. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine
