Anderson (Carpet Diem) effectively uses the perennial fantasy trope of a group of disparate characters on a vital mission in the gripping epic that launches his Eidyn Saga series. The kingdom of Eidyn has just survived a brutal conflict, but instead of enjoying peace, its monarch, King Janaeus, faces tense domestic challenges: a virulent plague may have mutated; demons who were summoned by Janaeus’s imprisoned adversary, Mynygogg, remain at large; and violent scavengers known as Reivers pose a threat to unarmed civilians. In the midst of this turmoil, the monarch tasks Aranok, a magician serving as his envoy, to rescue Taneitheia, the deposed queen of nearby Gaulle, from a revolt, hoping that she will ally herself with Eidyn. Aranok assembles a motley crew for the mission, including a soldier, a naval captain, a White Thorn warrior, a priest, and a blacksmith—but as their expedition grows increasingly dangerous, he wonders who among them he can trust. Anderson’s talent at crafting memorable characters will whet appetites for the sequel. Raymond Feist fans will be especially enthralled.

A war is a useful device for a novel because the conflict is already built in. But a lot of society's hard work happens after the battles are won. In Anderson's debut, Eidyn is overrun with plague, raiders, and the undead. Aranok, envoy to the king and one of the rare magic users in the country, has an impossible task: to save the deposed queen of a nearby kingdom as part of the recovery effort. As he and his band of warriors, wounded in spirit if not in body, fight their way across the land, a greater conspiracy unfolds before them. The war may be over, but the fight continues, and not everyone will survive. The Lost War is full of exciting action, but the interpersonal relationships of the party are even more compelling. Samily, a holy warrior who clashes with her less-religious teammates, is a special standout. This tightly plotted magical odyssey, which was originally self-published, will be a hit with fans of grimdark fantasy like Joe Abercrombie's Half a War (2015) or Nicholas Eames' Kings of the Wyld (2017).
