Grades 3-6 Although this book's subtitles focuses on Manning's philanthropic efforts, it's pretty much a straight biography. That's not a bad thing, because fans will identify with the story of a young athlete who has to compete against the reputation of his father, a former quarterback, and his brothers' skills. The text traces Manning's athletic prowess from his playing days in elementary and high school, his successful college career, and, of course, his outstanding professional play, with Manning winning MVP four times. A final chapter does inform readers about Manning's charity, Peyback, and the work he did, personally, in his hometown of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. A large typeface, a striking design, and plenty of color photographs will entice readers, even reluctant ones. Stats, a glossary, and suggested resources for learning more complete this attractive package.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)

This series ostensibly highlights professional athletes' good works. The majority of each text is actually biographical information which, while not inaccurate, is nothing really new. Philanthropic work is usually touched upon at the end. Reluctant readers will appreciate the accessible writing style and sports photographs. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind.
