Lucky Hart can read people; looking into someone's eyes reveals their worries, hopes and dreams, and even their deepest secrets. Unfortunately, this talent has isolated Lucky from her family, friends, and romantic relationships. When she discovers that a production company is making a reality show about people staying at Hennessee House, a haunted mansion that has run off every other caretaker, she immediately applies. When filming starts, Lucky meets the team and feels a connection, especially to Maverick Phillips. Lucky is asexual and has never felt instant chemistry or physical attraction to someone before, especially not this quickly. But as she and Maverick explore what's brewing between them, Hennessee House begins to fight for Lucky's full attention. This hauntingly funny rom-com is filled with interesting, fully developed characters (including the house). The dialogue is witty, and the interactions between characters are realistic to the personalities the author has created. VERDICT Kann's (The Romantic Agenda) latest is a fun, occasionally deep romance that will draw readers in and, like Hennessee House, won't let them go until the very end.--Heather Miller Cover

Lucky Hart, the protagonist of this endearing rom-com from Kann (The Romantic Agenda), has spent her life mostly alone, misunderstood, and considered “the weird girl.” She’s estranged from her family and judged by everyone she’s ever tried to have a relationship with, both because of her ESP and because of her asexuality. When she applies for a role as “The Caretaker” in an upcoming paranormal investigative TV show, she’s excited for the chance to live in the notoriously haunted Hennessee House and find out its secrets. What she didn’t expect is for the small crew to accept and embrace her for who she is, becoming real friends and surrogate family. She’s especially drawn to star ghost hunter Maverick Phillips but worries their romance could clash with her paranormal investigation. Meanwhile, the sentient house is lonely, moody, and wants Lucky all to itself. As Lucky comes into her strength with the support of newfound friends, will she be able to balance her romantic life with her interest in the supernatural? All she needs to do is remain within the grounds for 30 days--how hard can it be? The first night of her stay, Lucky meets Maverick Phillips, a crew member on The Caretaker and host of another popular investigative series. After the three previous caretakers took off within days of their arrival, Maverick feels responsible for ensuring Lucky's safety, but as the weeks progress, the two begin to grow closer. And the house begins to react to Lucky's presence with overwhelming smells of peppermint, levitating flowers, specters, and more. She can't help but wonder if Hennessee is trying to tell her something: Is she clashing with the house, or is it somehow making her powers stronger? Kann's latest novel is a page-turner with a captivating heroine, supernatural scares, and a sprinkling of romance. Lucky is a dynamic character with drive and an inquiring mind who also happens to be asexual, and her burgeoning relationship with Maverick is lovingly and expertly explored by Kann. When the house begins its haunting, Lucky won't stray from her principles--and the reader will stay with her until the end. A hauntingly unique tale of love, ghosts, and adventure.
